What is cough and how does it occur?
Normally the mucosa of the respiratory tract with the mucus, it produces hairy structured viruses, bacteria and foreign substances such as dust away from the body. This mechanism activates the cough reflex that is impaired during infection. In additional while taking off the foreign substances (sputum) production of mucus increases.
Instead of flowing from the nose and throat, mucus nose secretion irritates coughing.
This syndrome is more occurring durin cold winter season when bacteria are more commonly in the air.
Are there different features of cough?
Cough can show different characteristics in different diseases. With wet or dry cough, features can last up to a week. Cold cough sympotms are usually the last to fade away. Coughs connected to the upper respiratory tract infection are especially apparent during the night. Reclining postnasal drip stimulates the cough reflex in the bronchial tree and flows into a position. Usual respirator infection (fever in excess of 39 degree, runny nose and cough) brings to a mind more serious respiratory tract disease such as pneumonia and difficult breathing. Cough can cause vomiting by stimulating the gag reflex. Unless the vomiting countinues, there is nothing to be concerned.
Could prolonged cough disease be a precursor to another?
In particular, slow coming cold in children can prolong cough for weeks. If you child’s cough continues more than a month, then hypersensitivity of the respiratory tract, asthma and allergies may appear. In these cases, remember to consult a doctor.
Coughs can be a symptom of another disease as well for example, cough with high intensity, whooping cough, sigh alike are likely asthma cough that occurs in the chest area.
Cough in six months babies can get the infant tiring. Especially in the autumn-winter time, spreading RSV (Respiratory Syncythial Virus) causes colds in older children and can lead to severe breathing difficulties in infants affecting the lower respiratory tract and lungs.
What should be done to evaluate air quality inside the house?
Domestic environment can cause coughing; if symptoms subside after few hours after leaving the house and it starts again when you come back home, it should be considered that the air inside the house is irritative.
- Fuel gass in the house
Natural gas, kerosene, wood, coal and bottles gas used in the house pollute the air that is why it is important to have an adequate ventilation.
- Cigarette smoke
Cigarette, pipe and cigar smoke can cause lung damage.
- Household chemicals
Chlorine bleaches, cleaning sovlents containing volatile substances such as ammonia, toxic gases and paint toxic fumes.
- Dust and moisture

Newly layed carpets and fresh painted walls may contain irritant gases.
How can the family help coughing child?
The family has to be patient in this situation; doctors need to do their protocol.
Cough after every respiratory tract infection can continue for 6-8 weeks. The family’s purpose should not be stopping the cough. When the underlying cause is treated, the cough will get better. It is widely notated that in order to soften and cure the cough, it is not a good way to use drugs, especially for children.
You can use saline, herbal vapors instead to avoid side effects.
Simple methods for softening and calming the cough
- Do not smoke
Cigarette smoke disturbs the protective mechanism of the respiratorѕ tract and increases the production of phlegm. Do not smoke at homes where there are children and do not give permission for smoking.
- Give plenty of water to drink
Mucus can more easily be removed with liquid. This is most easily achieved by increasing fluid intake. The best expectorant is water. The more secretions gets out of the respiratory tract and lungs, the more powerful they get.
- Increase the moisture in the air
Especially in winter when indoor air is dry and the dryness of the respiratory track mucus increases. The best way is to use a stem machine to moisturize the cold air.
Nasopharyngitis nasal cold steam or Rhinosinusitis benefit from cough.
Nasal secretion can soften up through hydration. Breathless nose gets better. Cough reflex is diminished. Cold vapour is more effective in resolving inflammatory reactions in the respiratory tract so cough calms down.
Howerver, positive effects are seen more in children and in children with allergic wheezing there is not positive outcome.
- • If necessary, use antitussive drugs suggested from your doctor
Cough medicine, for easy mucus disposal or for cutting down dry cough, there are vaiuos types of them.
Cough medicines should not be allowed for children under the age of two. It could affect the respiratory tract that boosts accumulation of secretions in the bronchi and leads to pneumonia, which is a much more serious case.
